Paul Manship (1885-1966) was an American sculptor and a major contributor to the Art Deco movement. His sculptures tended toward a Neoclassical, mythological style with clean shapes and simple, flowing lines. Among his most well-known public commissions are Prometheus in the fountain at Rockefeller Center and the Celestial Sphere Woodrow Wilson Memorial in Geneva, Switzerland. Manship, who had begun drawing at a young age, emulating his older brother who worked as an engraver, attended the Saint Paul School of Art as a painter, but was stymied by his color blindness. He decided instead to pursue a career in sculpture, and the rest is history.
