About This Item
Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1940. iv,280;iv,281-536 pp. Duodecimo. Two volumes bound in one. Maroon buckram with gold gilt lettering stamped to the front board and spine. This copy once belonged to Stefansson's assistant, Olive Rathburn Wilcox, with her name stamped to the front board in gold gilt--though incorrectly spelled--and a lengthy inscription from Stefansson to Wilcox on the ffep. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Some very light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, otherwise a near fine copy. This edition, produced by the United States Army, is far rarer than the trade edition that was published a few years later. Stefansson, presumably, had this copy specially bound for his assistant, Olive Rathburn Wilcox, and wrote a wonderfully candid note to her in it where he refers to her as his "co-author" and states that "this seems to be the fourteenth book we have done together". A truly unique copy. 1940
