About This Item

London: Andre Deutsch, 1980. 8vo. 78pp. First edition illustrated by Ardizzone. Blue cloth boards with silver lettering to spine. Colour illustration to dust jacket by Ardizzone. Includes such well-known favourites as 'Jack the Giant Killer', 'The Three Bears' and 'The History of Tom Thumb'. Twelve traditional fairy tales selected and illustrated by Ardizzone. At the time of his death in November 1979 Edward Ardizzone was at work on illustrations for a selection of twenty-five of the English Folk Tales collected and edited by the folklorist Joseph Jacobs. He had illustrated eleven of the stories presented in this book. The illustration for the twelfth story,'The Children in the Wood', first appeared in an edition of this poem published by The Bodley Head in 1972, as did the watercolour reproduced on the jacket. Black and white illustrations throughout the text plus colour reproduction of a watercolour on the dust jacket. Fine. Very slight spotting to upper edge of text block. Dust jacket very good and unclipped, slight soiling only. Jacket in a protective sleeve.
