Folding map of Chile in three sheets. Ten full page plates: map, plans, views, one color portrait of Araucanian chief. Volume II - The Andes and Pampas: Minerals, Indian Remains, Mammals (Spencer F. Baird), Birds (John Cassin), etc. Illustrated with color plates (3 of Indian artifacts, 15 of birds), b&w plates, woodcuts, maps. Bound in decorated original brown cloth. Outer rear hinge of Volume I starting. Damps stain to top edge of many pages of Volume I. Cover scrape to Volume II with backstrip partially reglued, foreedge dampstain to the first few pages. Folio (14x21) bound in red half leather over maroon boards. Number 145 of an edition limited to 530 copies. Includes an illustrated essay by Brian Reade, 15 pp. Edward Lear (1812-1888) was a brilliant artist, but only his early creative years were devoted to painting birds. His monograph of the parrots reflects his artistic talent and remains one of the most prized illustrated works of the 19th century.

Bound in half dark green morocco, spine with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in two compartments, covers have a large gilt-stamped botany illustration in gold on both the front and rear covers, antique marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, lg 8vo (10 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches). The first volume of Michaux covers pines and firs, walnut and hickories, the second volume presents 20 different oaks, with maples, birches, beeches, chestnuts, and nyssas among other groups, and the third volume documents the magnolias along with ribinias, the tulip tree, the catalpa and others. The Volumes II and III of the Nuttall volumes (this set lacks Volume I) cover trees left out of Michaux as well adding descriptions of trees from Oregon, California and the Rocky Mountains where Michaux did not explore and collect. [The family worked chaotically, issuing volumes with different numbers of plates to subscribers.] With two unnumbered plates (the Erne and King of the Vultures) and 54 numbered plates (Pl. 3 to Pl. 56) with their text pages.Second edition of this work on the birds of the famous menagerie at Osterley Park commissioned by the banker and politician Robert Child.
