About This Item

Berkeley, CA: University Of California Press. Fine in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1978. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. First Edition (1978) , not directly stated, but implied: no subsequent printings noted and a complete numerical sequence in accordance with the University of California Press's customary practice at the time of publication. Fine in Very Good+ DJ: The Book is flawless: the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting or marginalia or marks in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome, like-new copy, structurally sound and tighly bound, showing no flaws. Bright and clean. Corners sharp. Virtually "As New". The DJ shows a one-inch closed tear at the top of the rear "hinge"; a small stain at the heel of the backstrip; a tiny closed tear at the top edge of the front panel and the very faintest smudges to the open-weave background ground field of the panels; unclipped; mylar-protected. Clean, attractive, and intact, but no longer 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (9.25 x 6.3 x 0.7 inches) . Xii, 138 pages. Translated and Edited by Rolf George and Roderick M. Chisholm. Language: English. Weight: 15.5 ounces. Rust-toned cloth over boards with gilt titles at the backstrip. Hardback with DJ. Franz Clemens Brentano (1838 – 1917) was a German philosopher and psychologist. His 1874 treatise 'Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint', considered his magnum opus, is credited with having reintroduced the medieval scholastic concept of intentionality into contemporary philosophy. He was an ordained Catholic priest, but withdrew from the priesthood in 1873 due to the dogmatic definition of papal infallibility in 'Pastor aeternus'. His teaching triggered research in a wide array of fields such as linguistics, logic, mathematics and experimental psychology through the younger generation of philosophers who gathered as sort of "School of Brentano". Brentano had a special interest in Aristotle and scholastic philosophy. This book is his dissertation, written in 1862 at Tübingen under the title On the Several Senses of Being in Aristotle. His thesis advisor was Franz Jakob Clemens. After defending this thesis, he began to study theology and entered the seminary in Munich and then Würzburg. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1864. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; xii, 138 pages .
