About This Item

Milwaukee: Strickland and Co, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. 288pp., (6)pp. Ads at Rear. The author, a surgeon of the Fifth Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers during the Civil War, presents his journal to the public in the style for which it was written, without correction of even its grammatical errors. The reader will know the fact that it was written, not for the public, but for himself, whilst performing the most arduous duties in the confusion of camp life, sometimes amidst the depressing scenes of the hospital, sometimes in the tumult of battle, and amid the groans of the dying, much of it oh horseback, whilst witnessing the scenes described. Besides its general interest, this book has a local interest to all Wisconsin readers. And especially those particularly interested in the 5th Wisconsin. Bound in brown embossed cloth, spine lettering gilt, light wear to corners and head, small nick to spine, on signature lightly pulled away from top, a couple of stains to front board. A very good copy.
