About This Item

Hollis Taggart Galeries, 2006. First. Softcover. Very good except for minor rubbing, a scuff at the top corner of the backstrip and creases long the bottom edge of the front cover. 4to, stiff pictorial wrappers. 96 pp, 46 color illustrations + 49 text figures and photographs, color frontispiece, bibliography. Exhibition May 24 - June 30, 2006. Friedman (1874?-1946) was forced by family circumstances to take a steady but low-paying job with the post office in 1893, where he worked for 40 years. While it was not until his retirement that he was able to become a full-time painter, after about 1905 he took his art seriously, studying with Robert Henri, spending six months in Paris while on leave from the post office, and showing with the Society of Indendent Artists, an influential group whose membership included Bellows, Marin, Duchamp, Prendergast, Man Ray and Joseph Stella. Exhibiting regularly from about 1915, and in solo exhibitions from 1925, he attracted important critical notice. This exhibition was the first full-scale retrospecive of his work in 20 years. 2006920403
