New York: Theatre Arts, Inc, 1928. First limited edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. Facsimile signatures of Isadora Duncan on inside front and back covers. Quarto. (12) 147 (1)pp., 33 plates. Original cream half cloth over blue paper-covered boards with black lettering on cream paper labels on cover and the spine. Frontispiece photograph by Steichen. Vignette on title page. "Not a dancer was Isadora, but a prophet speaking the unique world language, voicing a beauty not only immense and sublime, but within the reach of and understood by the mass..." (Raymond Duncan). "Isadora was to me something at once magical and elemental, like dawn at the edge of the sea, pine trees in a quiet moonlight grove, or bells ringing from far, undefineable distances." (Mary Fanton Roberts).

With photographs by Arnold Genthe and Edward Steichen and reproductions of original drawings by Leon Bakst, Antoine Bourdelle, José Clara, Maurice Denis,Grandjouan,August von Kaulbach,van Deering Perrine, Auguste Rodin, Dunoyer de Segonzac and Abraham Walkowitz. Essays by Isadora Duncan with permission by the author's estate, Raymond Duncan. Jose Clará's drawing called for page 136 bound in before Steichen photograph at page 138. Photographs of Steichen called for at page 142 and 144 bound in succession at page 142 (as issued). Light wear along edges of binding, small chips at foredge corners and along edges of paper labels on binding. Inscription on front free endpaper.

Description:
NY: Theatre Arts, Inc, 1928. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Poor. First edition, a distressed copy apparently handed-down by a series of students of Isadora and her disciples, signed by an Isadorable and other Duncan-trained dancers. Cloth over spine perished, front cover detached and pages water-stained around edges throughout.; With the bookplate of Anna Duncan with her holograph. Anna was one of Isadora's six adopted daughters and first generation of students called Isadorables. Anna started her own studio in New York. Among her students was Ethel Goodman. Under Duncan's bookplate is an inscription to Ethel from Anita, who is Anita Zahn (1903-1994), whose primary dance teacher was Elizabeth Duncan, Isadora's sister; "To Ethel this bible of our life work. With love Anita Xmas 1928" Ethel apparently later passed the book onto another owner, unidentified: "With love from Edith and Tina(? Jim?)" (indecipherable). Sold as is.
