Hartford: Edwin Valentine Mitchell. Cloth. Good/No Jacket. No date, presumed circa 1928. Perhaps the first American edition, although printed in Great Britain. Beige cloth. No jacket. 175 pp. With black and white photo plates throughout. A thorough look at flying airplanes, considering seaplane flying, types of aircraft, aircraft design details, the use of senses, the art of test flying, etc. With photos of single engine seaplanes, monoplanes, biplanes, triplanes, flying boats, etc. Norman Macmillan was a pilot during World War I, serving in the British Armed Forces and considered an ace by having nine confirmed victories. GOOD condition. Area of dark scuffing/staining/soiling to the front cover, with some dark scuffs to the rear cover. Minor soiling, fading, scuffing and edgewear. Interior solid. Very minor scattered foxing, with a faint dampstain affecting the fore edge of a few pages. One sentence underlined in pencil in the text.

An historically significant Jean Batten ASSOCIATION COPY: dated, signed and inscribed by the AUTHOR in 1931 to VICTOR DOREE, a fellow pioneer WW1 Royal Air Corps pilot, who in 1932 bought JEAN BATTEN her famous 'Gipsy Moth' aeroplane. Thus, it is likely that this copy of this book was a deciding factor in determining that Jean Batten would fly a Gipsy Moth. From the library of Ian Mackersey, Batten's biographer.
