An early edition of this work, which was first published a year earlier. These lectures were originally delivered at the University of Cambridge between 1916-18. To these lectures Quiller-Couch discusses apprehension versus comprehension, children's reading, reading for examination, the values of Greek and Latin as well as reading The Bible. Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch was a Cornish writer. He was a prolific novelist and is best remembered for his work 'The Oxford Book of English Verse' as well as for his literary criticism. An important selection of lectures from a key player of literary criticism in the early 20th century. Condition: In a full calf prize binding with gilt stamping to the front board and spine. Binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper indicating a Riviere binding. Externally, generally smart with patches of rubbing o the extremities and to the joints. Further rubbing to the raised bands and to the head and tail of spine. A few marks to boards. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of front endpaper, J E Ruffer. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with occasional light spots, heavier to the first and last few pages. Overall Condition: Very Good.
