About This Item

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1944. Very Good/Very Good. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1944. First Edition. Octavo; ix + 255pp, including bibliography and index. Sixty-two B&W primary source documentary illustrations, some full page, others embedded in text. Brown dust jacket with curtained proscenium outline on front panel. Royal blue boards. Gilt spine lettering. Top of text-block stained marigold.

Price-clipped dust jacket slightly faded at spine; slight chipping and tiny tears on edges and at corners. Binding spine faded, somewhat erratically, and apparently through the jacket. Textblock unmarked, tight, square; pages lightly and evenly age tanned.

Kernodle was a leading mid-20th-century theater scholar who analyzed the relationship between the Western pictorial tradition and the visual presentation of staged productions. The extensive, nearly exhaustive, bibliography remains authoritative.
