She devoted herself to scholarship and learned many languages. After a brief residence in Italy she returned to Kent and lived in Goudhurst. Cornwallis wrote the majority of the titles in Pickering's "Small Books on Great Subjects" and later made a name for herself as an advocate of women's emancipation, including the debate on married women's legal rights.
