About This Item

New York: George D.Baldwin, 1844., 1844. 8vo. pp. 4 p.l., 574. 35 engraved plates (7 folding) & numerous illus. in the text (1 partly hand-coloured). original cloth, rebacked with spine mounted (corners bit worn, some dampstaining to portions of text & 1 plate). First Edition. Gilroy, an American weaver and manufacturer "thoroughly versed in the business", here covers the little-known techniques of weaving intricate and ornamental textures that were not generally detailed in standard texts. He dismisses the prominent technological 'savants' of previous years, including Greenough, Peddie, Yates and Ure, as offering little of practical value for the fancy warper or figure weaver of the day, and being devoid of practical instruction on the construction of looms and other apparatus requisite for the production of the more intricate kinds of textures. Included are chapters on plain weaving, tweeling, double cloth, marseilles quilting and velvets, cross weaving, comprising gauze and net work, figured weaving, carpeting (Ingrain, Brussels, Wilton, Turkey, Velvet Pile), rugs and tapestry, lace and embroidery, plain and figured weaving by power. Kress C.6315. Woodbury p. 17. cfGoldsmiths' 35030.. F. Hardcover.
