Pp.81 + errata; a very good uncut copy in original blue paper wrappers; a little frayed & worn along backstrip but well preserved; ownership signature of the author's descendant A.D. Wagner at head of title. Born in Lewes and a Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge, Michell was an accomplished classical scholar and numbered the Duke of Wellington among his pupils. As Vicar of Brighton he played a significant role in its rapid development in the mid-18thC. This scarce medical treatise (one of just two published works), first appeared in 1766. Anthony Relhan had established a medical practice at Brighton in 1759, and in 1761 published A Short History of Brighthelmstone, then a town of about two thousand inhabitants, which gives an account of climate, mineral spring, and other advantages of the place as a residence for invalids.
