McGraw-Hill, New York, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Fair. preface by author, symbolic borders and colour plates, chart of interdependence of cultural styles, index. Black and white illustrated frontispiece, showing "The Artist and the Critic" by Peter Breughel. The text is illustrated with 27 coloured plates and copious black and white plates, plans, line illustrations, black and white illustrations and designs. Beige coloured cloth covered boards with brown coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper with blue coloured background and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. The history of civilisation as seen through man's art, in all its forms. Softening and rubbing to the head into the heel of the backstrip and bumping to the book corners. Dust marks to the top textblock edge and browning to all edges of the textblock edge and to the pages. Gift inscription to the half title page and there are a few foxing spots to the first two and last few pages of the book. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the head and to the heel of the backstrip. There is a 1.25" tear to the top edge of the front dustwrapper panel with associated creasing. Heavy rubbing to the fold over creases and the rear spine garter has a 3 inch split, 1 inch from the lower dustwrapper edge. Heavy trading to the backstrip and browning to the fold over panels.
