To understand more fully the distance traveled in the quality of our urban life we might find it profitable to look at how earlier generation of our townspeople lived. For this purpose we are going to avail ourselves of figures like Thomas Hancock, Paul Revere, and others, not to write anything resembling biographies of these august historical personages, but only to make use of them as pivotal figures, and as a framework in which to place a picture of their times..."
