About This Item
New York: Street & Smith, 1939. Volume XXIII, Number 5. Original wraps. Very good. The July 1939 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, featuring stories by A.E. van Vogt and Isaac Asimov. This issue is considered by many experts in the genre to be the official start of the Golden Age of Science Fiction.. Measures 6.5" x 9.5". Illustrated wraps, cover by Graves Gladney. Front cover detached, professionally restored with archival quality glue. Some rubbing and small losses to spine. Internally clean. A notable piece, including the first science fiction publication from A.E. van Vogt titled "Black Destroyer," and one of Asimov's earliest publications, "Trends." "The July 1939 issue is the one usually highlighted at the start of the Golden Age... The chief significance of this issue is that it introduced A.E. van Vogt and Isaac Asimov to Astounding." (The Time Machines, p. 111) Numerous other popular names joined soon after: Robert A. Heinlein in August, Theodore Sturgeon in September, and the beginning of the "Grey Lensman" serial by E.E. Smith in October.
