About This Item
Esphera en comvn, celeste, y terraqvea.
4to; 4 preliminary leaves, 256, [8] pages XII plates 20 cm; contemporary vellum.
RARE FIRST EDITION of this work by a Jesuit from Castellón, Zaragoza; the book was intended to be a renewed version of the traditional texts of the Sphera adapted to new knowledge, and is an eloquent example of the author's concern to disseminate advances in knowledge in the Spanish scientific environment. The outline of the book is the usual one in this type of treatise: I. Of the Common Sphere. II. Of the Celestial Sphere. III. Of the terrestrial sphere.
The author: Spanish Jesuit mathematician, astronomer and cosmologist, belonging to the Spanish novatores or pre-enlightened. He is commonly cited as Father Zaragoza. He stood out as a practical or empirical astronomer, that is, as a great observer. Since 1660 he made observations with powerful glasses that he built himself; he observed the comets of 1664 and 1677.
