Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1913. First Edition. Cloth. Near fine. Signed first edition of Trans-Atlantic Historical Solidarity by Charles Francis Adams, Jr., of the Adams political family.. Octavo, 184pp. Light rubbing to cloth, solid text block, free of any notations or wear. Top edge gilt. Signed on the front free endpaper to Eliza van Loon, wife of Hendrik Willem van Loon, recipient of the first Newbery Medal in 1922 for The Story of Mankind (1921). Inscription reads: "Eliza van Loon from C.F. Adams. Washington, 1914." Includes laid-in letter from Charles F. Adams. Charles Francis Adams, Jr. (1835-1915) was the great-grandson of President John Adams and the grandson of President John Quincy Adams. He fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War, serving with distinction at Gettysburg. By the end of the war, he was promoted to the rank of colonel, and in 1866, he was awarded the rank of brevet brigadier general. Adams would later serve as the President of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1884-1890, after which he would become a prominent American historian.
