The front and rear covers are loose, as are the first few pages (up to the index). Includes a 16 page catalog of publications, in the rear. The binding is the remnant of the original 3/4 leather. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 22+32+16 pages .

Longman & Co. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Undated, c1828. Rebound in half morocco leather with hand coloured maps throughout. The boards are ever so slightly rubbed, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is age-related tanning and marking throughout, but there are no other markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are neat and complete. The binding is secure. Longman Rees Orme Brown & Green, London, 1842 Engraved title and index pages. 22 double-page hand-coloured engraved maps. 33 page index and 16 page publisher's catalogue at the back. No date but bound-in publisher's catalogue at rear dated October 1842. Dark ink stain on map viii, affecting the inset island of Sardinia. Largely marginal dark ink stain on map xiii near the Black Sea. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front free endpaper of Stamford Grammar School, G.Simpson August 25th 1843 and of John Lamont, 8 St. Mary's Road Canonbury. Inner hinges split but binding is still firm and solid. 16 x 22 cm. Quarter red roan binding with yellow marbled baords. Original printed paper label on upper cover. Spine somewhat worn, corners slightly worn and bumped. Boards slightly rubbed.Provenance: Stamford School was founded in 1532 by William Radcliffe, the alderman of Stamford. London: Longman's Rees, Lime, Brown & Green, 1829. Hardcover. fair. 8vo. Decorated paper-covered boards, crudely rebacked with heavy age wear. Front board almost detached but still holding. Hinges starting. Small plate with printed name "William Lunn, F.R.G.S. and handwritten "from Phyllis, 1926" on inside of front board. Sporadic foxing throughout. Some writing and a drawing in black ink on rear endpapers. Profusely illustrated with 20 maps in color & b/w as well as 1 plan in b/w. Maps are of Ancient Britannia, Hispania, Gallia, Germania, Italia, Macedonia, Grecia, Asia Minor, Syria & other countries. Binding in poor, interior in overall good condition.

Spine and corners worn. Soiling to cloth on both boards. Ink inscriptions on front and rear endpapers and title page. Front endpapers have spots at top. Plates have a wave to them. Some soiling to p. 33 of index. Samuel Butler was an English classical scholar and schoolmaster. He is not to be confused with his better-known grandson of the same name, author of the novel Erewhon. This text is signed at rear by G. Perry McClintock of Seskanore House, Co. Tyrone. Online photos of the house suggest this book may once have formed part of the fine library in a gentleman's country seat.
