New York; (1960): Harper & Brothers, 1960. Octavo. 190 pages, index. illustrated with 24 half-tones and 4 line drawings. Once the Soviets successfully launched an ICBM in August of 1957, the many in the government and in the Press asked: How could the United States be behind in the race into space. President Eisenhower's Christmas broadcast in 1958 announced an all out effort to develop the most advanced missile system. The Atlas missile both developed a powerful system to launch weapons but it became the missile to put the first of the astronauts into orbit in Project Mercury. One of the first books to deal with one of the greatest advances in space science. Bound in 1/4 black cloth over light green cloth stamped in blind, spine lettering silver, near fine very nice unclipped pictorial dust jacket with light wear to spine ends.
