About This Item
Melbourne: Melbourne University Press, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. Melbourne, Melbourne University Press, 1956. Large quarto, 69 pages with numerous drawings by Gwen Walsh and 31 plates (after photographs by Charles Mountford). Green cloth; endpapers lightly offset; ownership signature; an excellent copy with the dustwrapper slightly rubbed, creased, chipped and torn with slight loss. 'Wherever I travelled ... trees excited both my imagination and my desire to show their beauty to others. But they were elusive subjects, and so seldom grew where I could show their full beauty that, after half a lifetime among them, this book of tree portraits is all that I can offer.' More than half the superb photographs were taken in Central and North Australia. 'The book was judged one of the twelve best books of the year in Australia and I think it will compare quite favourably anywhere' (quoting the publisher, in a letter loosely inserted in a copy we have sold).
