About This Item
London: Various. London, Various, 1912-1959. Hardbacks. Margery Lawrence's own copies of her books, each has been uniformly bound and signed by the author. Later titles are all first editions, early titles are mostly later impressions. A complete (?) set of her solo published works. Margery Lawrence is perhaps best known for her supernatural pieces and in particular her short story "The Haunted Saucepan," which was published in 1929 and became a popular radio play in the 1940s. Her work also explored the themes of female identity and the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society. The 39 books are each numbered by ML, though her numbering has gone awry as #28 is numbered twice and her first book, Songs of Childhood is unnumbered, thus Residence Afresh is numbered 37th, but is actually 39th. Condition is near fine, the bindings are in nice shape with some books trimmed, and sometimes not perfectly. Bound in cloth with leather labels, some with wear. Publishers: Grant Richards, Hurst & Blackett, Jarrolds and Robert Hale. 1912-1959 (1) Songs of Childhood, Grant Richards, 1912 (2) Miss Brandy, Hutchinson, 1922, Third Edition (3) Red Heels, Hutchinson, nd [c1924] (4) Nights of the Round Table, Hutchinson, nd [1926] (5) Drums of Youth, Hurst, 2nd Imp, nd [c1929] (6) Bohemian Glass, Hurst, 14th Thousand, nd [c1930] (7) Madonna of the Seven Moons, Hurst, 4th Imp, nd [c1931] (8) Snapdragon, Hurst, nd [1931] (9) Silken Sarah, Hurst, 2nd Imp, nd [c1932] (10) The Terraces of Night, Hurst, 2nd Imp, nd [c1933] (11) Madam Holle, Jarrolds, 10th Thousand, nd [c1934] (12) The Crooked Smile, Jarrolds, 2nd Imp (cheap ed), 1936 (13) The Floating Cafe, Jarrolds, 2nd Imp, nd [c1936] (14) Overture to Life, Jarrolds, nd [1937] (15) The Bridge of Wonder, Hale, 1939 (16) Strange Caravan, Hale, 1941 (additionally signed to endpaper) (17) Step Light, Lady, Hale, 1942 (additionally inscribed to the endpaper to Arthur [husband?]) (18) Ferry Over Jordan, Hale, 2nd Imp, 1945 (19) Number Seven Queer Street, Hale, 1945 (20) The Gilded Jar, Hale, 1947 (jacket? panel pasted in) (21) Fourteen to Forty-Eight, Hale, nd [1949] (22) Cardboard Castle, Hale, 1951 (inscribed on pasted in paper, pasted over her previous note) (23) The Rent in the Veil, Hale, 1951 (additional pasted note) (24) Emma of Alkistan, Hale, 1953 (25) Evil Harvest, Hale, 1954 (26) Daughter of the Nile, Hale, 1956 (note re. being last Hale publication following Hale's death) (27) Spanish Interlude, Hale, 1959 (presumably the above note means by the person Hale, rather than the publisher) (28) Master of Shadows, Hale, 1959 (29) The Gate of Yesterday, Hale, 1960 (30) Skivvy, Hale, 1961 (31) Green Amber, Hale, 1962 (32) The Unforgetting Heart, Hale, 1963 (33) Dead End, Hale, 1964 (34) The Yellow Triangle, Hale, 1965 (35) The Tomorrow of Yesterday, Hale, 1966 (36) Bride of Darkness, Hale, 1967 (37) Over my Shoulder, Hale, 1968 (38) The Green Bough, Hale, 1968 (39) A Residence Afresh, Hale, 1969 [10579, Hyraxia Books]. .
