About This Item
NY: Neale Publishing, 1900. Second. Hard Cover. VG/None. Strictly an autobiography. Johnston was a Georgian, educated at Mercer, and an anti-secessionist which cost him his position at the University of Georgia. He did not serve in the Confederate Army, but ran boy's schools during the War and long after. Of interest are his recollections of growing up on a plantation. (Interesting anecdote: he was puny so his father sent him to the field to work with his slaves four days a week. It worked.
He knew fellow Georgian Alexander Stephens. They had many conversations about the War which are interesting reading.
I could not find information of why he was titled"colonel." Probably self anointed.
