First Edition, Limited to 106 numbered copies signed by Braque and Char - this one of 40 on Arches with original colour lithograph (‘Le Poète’) by Braque on the wrappers. The first six copies, also with a lithographed cover, were entirely printed on Japon nacré. The remaining 60 copies were unillustrated. A further 115 copies of the lithograph were separately issued. “Perhaps more than any other contemporary painter, Braque has been the subject of handsomely printed tributes to his art.” (The Artist and the Book) Char was a close friend and collaborator of Braque. He wrote more on Braque than any other painter, and Braque illustrated more works by Char than any other artist. All five of Char’s poems in hommage to Braque are printed here for the first time. Contains 17 original lithographs by Willem de Kooning. The lithographs were originally created in 1967 as charcoal drawings on mylar sheets, to illustrate O'Hara's 'Ode to Willem de Kooning'. Only three of De Kooning's drawings were used in the MOMA publication. 32x25 cm. Thuluth and Naskhi in black ink on paper illustrated and fexed on illustrated paper in golden flworal shapes. Signed in wite ink in Thuluth: Katabahu al Hajj Kamil. Ahmed Kamil Akdik is one of the last great Ottoman calligraphers. Born in the Fındıklı neighborhood of Istanbul in 1861, Ahmed Kâmil displayed an interest in the art of calligraphy from his earliest years in primary school. In 1879 he began to study thuluth (sülüs) and naskhi (nesih) scripts with the most renowned calligrapher of the era, Sami Efendi (1838-1912), and after earning his certificate in 1884 with the approval of Şevki Efendi, he became one of the foremost Ottoman calligraphers. His certificate (icazet) is preserved in the Library of the Topkapı Palace Museum.
After beginning to work for the Divan-ı Hümayun (the Ottoman Imperial Council) in 1894, he learned from his teacher Sami Efendi the divani and celi divani scripts, as well as the inscription of the tuğra, or imperial monogram, and replaced his teacher… Read More
