An authoritative contemporary account of the decisive recapture of Delhi by the British forces. “The King of Delhi was taken by Hodson 1st B.E.fusiliers, a most active officer. The Begum was also with him. He is an old man, very much crippled & can hardly walk. His life alone was promised, & on this he gave himself up; he had been deserted by nearly all his attendants. He was first taken to a house in the city, & I saw the first guard placed over him; since then he has been brought into the palace, but as a prisoner. The General, I think quite rightly declines seeing him, and hands over the whole of his management to the Civil Authorities ...”
