About This Item

C.G. [Carlton Gardens], 20 March 1849. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, clean tears along upper and lower edges (see below), integral blank leaf docketed on receipt. Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865), Prime Minister (1855-58, 1859-65). “The lady is amorous no doubt but I daresay her legs are not so black as they are described ...” Sir George Hamilton Seymour (1797-1880) was minister plenipotentiary to Portugal (1847-1851), residing in Lisbon. It is likely that the clean tears along the edges are disinfection slits.
