Bexley Heath, 25 January 1888. 1 page 7 x 4½ inches, surface creases, minor marginal tears. Sir Hall Caine (1853-1931), novelist. I have disposed of a new play to Mr. Wilson Barrett, who will produce it when the Golden Ladder has run its course, but whether at the Globe or Princesss I dont know. It is the original of my novel The Deemster, but of course it differs from the story. Barrett intends the piece to be his chief attraction in America. Hall Caines novel The Deemster (1887), set in the Isle of Man, received excellent reviews. It ran to more than 50 editions and was translated into at least 9 languages. Wilson Barrett bought the stage rights and produced a stage version called Ben-my-Chree (Manx for 'Girl of my Heart') which was also successful, despite its changed ending.
