Curzon, George Nathaniel, Marquess Curzon of Kedleston (1859–1925), politician, traveller, and viceroy of India. At the time of writing, he was Foreign Secretary. In January 1924, Curzon vacated the Foreign Office and he was able to devote much of 1924 to completing one of his finest books, a study of Calcutta and the viceroys which was posthumously published under the title British Government in India; the work mentioned in this letter.

Pišek has had to cancel several concert engagements due to a family wedding, and send regrets that he will not be able to participate in Benedict's anniversary concert in London. He plans to return in April of 1864 for the season "in order to make up for what I could not fulfill this time." He wishes Benedict "all the best and great success" with his concert, and says "I would like to ask you to compose another scene for me when you feel like it, and to send it to me in Germany, so that next year I can perform it for the English concert goers." Exmouth, Eng, 1800. Very Good. 1 folded sheet creating 4 pages; handwritten letter on 2 pages (signed), 1 page blank, address on the 4th page. Teignmouth notes that "Lady Teignmouth has lately presented me with another son." The engraved portrait (drawn by J. Richmond, engraved by W. Walker) was published by Hatchard & Sons in 1843. John Shore, 1st Baron Teignmouth (1751-1834) was an official of the East India Co. and served as Governor General of Bengal from 1793 to 1797; the following year he was created Baron Teignmouth. He was also the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society. In Very Good Condition: letter is lightly creased; lightly soiled; print is lightly soiled in margins; indentation at upper edge; image is clean and crisp.

1897. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter, dated Canton, Ohio, 12 April 1897, to J. M. Dickinson, Lisbon, Ohio, accepting the invitation he had extended from Starr Post 138, G.A.R., in Lisbon, Ohio, for her to visit on Memorial Day. Kate Brownlee Sherwood (1841-1914) was a poet and journalist, as well as the editor from 1883 of the Woman's Dept. of The National Tribune, a monthly publication for Civil War veterans and their families. She also helped to organize the Woman's Relief Corps to aid the Grand Army of the Republic the same year, was the first president of the Ohio Newspaper Women's Association in 1902, and supported women's suffrage. J. M. (John M.) Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon, Ohio, through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from Columbiana Co. 1882-1885; and was a justice of the peace in Lisbon… Read More

1926. Very Good. 2 documents. The 1st is a typed letter, dated U. S. Naval Training Station, Hampton Roads, Va., 3 May 1926, signed "R. R. Belknap," informing Major Eben Putnam that he had received and would be happy to read Putnam's draft of an account of the North Sea Mine Barrage during World War One. The 2nd is a handwritten note from ? Rottingham, Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, about the account, noting that it is "going to Belknap." Major Eben Putnam (1868-1933) was a captain in the Quartermaster Corps from 1917 to 1919; following the war, he was an editor and author of genealogy and military history. Reginald Rowan Belknap (1871-1959) had a long and distinguished career in the U. S. Navy, including commanding Mine Squadron One, which laid the North Sea Mine Barrage during the First World War.
