About This Item

Fremont, Ohio, 1881. 1 page. 8vo. Bifolium. Old mounts to verso of blank second leaf, otherwise fine. 1 page. 8vo. Hayes writes to the Reverend Lyman Abbott two weeks after the end of his presidency: "My Dear Sir: I beg you to excuse a brief and hurried not of acknowledgement and thanks for your kind and valued favor of the 9th inst. It is a very great fratification to receive such consideration. With best wishes and all aspect Sincerely R.B. Hayes."

Abbott (1835-1922), was an influential minister, writer, and contemporary of Henry Ward Beecher, whom he succeeded as pastor of Plymouth Church, in Brooklyn. He also co-edited the periodical The Christian Union (later The Outlook) with Beecher, edited Beecher's papers, and published over two dozen volumes on Christianity and American life. In a reminiscence of the former president published in the Outlook for May 4, 1921, Abbott recalled meeting Hayes on two separate occasions.
