From the beginning he was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, and some of his work showed the detail, deep colors, and realistic forms that characterize the style. Calderon became a leading member of the St John's Wood Clique, a group of artists interested in modern genre and historical subjects. Historical, biblical, and literary themes were common in Calderon's later work. You will notice that in the second column - Male Students, Nude Models - I have added that the two models should be of the same sex (either two male or two female models), the reason of that is:- that one room leads out of the other and - should one model be late, it would be awkward to mass through without disturbing the work.
