Martineau", 8" x 2", mounted to a larger sheet 9.75" x 6.5", c. 1818, at a time when the sixteen year old future writer began losing her senses of taste and smell and was becoming increasingly deaf; preferring to stay indoors than socialize, in full: "I return with books with hearty thanks. It is not often one has such a treat. I have read them with infinite pleasure. No one has touched them but myself & I hope you will find them unimpaired & that I have not inconvenienced you by the time I have kept them". *From the collection of James Waddell Alexander (1804-1859) American Presbyterian Minister and theologian. This is a very early example of Martineau's handwriting in very good condition.

British social theorist and Whig writer often cited as the first female Sociologist.
