About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1943. Book. Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 8vo. Four-line signed inscription at front fly of book, "For Don DeVoss / from his friend / Margaret Mitchell / August 12th, 1944." Unknown provenance, but we do know the author was very active during WWII, including writing letters, offering humor and encouragement, and sympathy, to enlisted men. We also know from many examples of her signature that she used a more formal, controlled hand -- including the capital E's in both words of her name -- for certain things, such as signing copies of Gone With The Wind, and a less formal, more free-form signature for other things, such as personal letters. We have seem numerous examples of both from various MM archives. We have been unable to determine the identity of the recipient. The book itself is a good copy, with minor general wear, in a somewhat worn and soiled dust jacket, with shallow chipping at the spine ends and ends of folds, and minor wear at edges..
