About This Item
Known as "Iron Puddler" and "Puddler Jim", the Wales-born American businessman James J. Davis (1873-1947) was one of only 3 cabinet officers to serve under 3 consecutive Presidents. Davis served as U.S. Secretary of Labor under Presidents Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. Davis supported the eugenics movement though he also supported the rights of workers to strike to a certain extent. He established the U.S. Border Patrol and proposed restrictions on immigration quotas. Elected as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania in 1930, he served until 1945 after which he resumed his work with the Loyal Order of Moose which he had first joined in 1906.
