Professor Thecla Sansaridou-Hendrickx is a Senior NRF rated Researcher & Associate Professor, employed in the Department of Greek and Latin Studies at the University of Johannesburg. In this, her MA thesis, she sets out "to examine the theories and problems regarding the awakening of the national consciousness in the 13th century in Byzantium, and to measure them against other theories on the emergence of nationalism in Europe during the Middle Ages. In addition, the causes and forces which unified the inhabitants of the Byzantine territory behind a collective consciousness and/or a common national identity [are] defined and analysed", leading "firstly, to a better understanding of nationalism in general, and secondly ... [raising] new questions and [analysing] new problems as challenges to further research." .
