After the hostages were released in 1981, he left his 20-year State Department career to direct the Cathedral Peace Institute, a group dealing with religion and foreign policy. His 1986 book, ''The Ayatollah in the Cathedral,'' contended that many nuclear freeze proponents were as intolerant of dissent as any Iranian ideologue.
