Description:
Bangkok: White Lotus, 2008. The Back Blocks of China, a narrative of experiences among the Chinese, Sifans, Lobs, Tibetans, Slums and Kachins, in the lands between Shanghai and the Irrawadi. In 1900 a party of British citizens fleeing the Boxer Rebellion left China using the back door. This unusual group of escapees, consisting of business people and engineers, saw the country they traversed from a different point of view than that of the usual travellers of the time. As they crossed parts of China previously unseen by Europeans, they observed and recorded their experiences. These records have produced a unique source book showing inner China and the borderlands with Burma of 100 years ago. The text is enriched with two maps and by 28 photos taken by members of the group. 269 pp. Tape residue marks on front and rear endpapers; light tanning of cover; otherwise internally a new/unread copy.. Reprint. Soft Cover. Very Good/n/a. 21 x 15 cm..
