About This Item

New York: The Greystone Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1951. First US Edition. Hardcover. This is the true FIRST EDITION which precedes the UK First Edition of 1952. In the original Green boards with gilt titling to the spine and gilt publishers logo to the front cover. The covers have a couple of VERY Small marks, old thin broken lines of sellotape glue only, (these may be able to be removed? ). A slight central crease line to the spine but not too noticable. The head/tail of the spine is 'bumped', and there is a little light fading to the very edge of the book, but all of this is negligible. In the original publishers' pictorial dustjacket. The dustjacket has a few closed tears all of which are now neatly repaired to the reverse of the d/j with sellotape/old masking tape. The d/j also has some edgewear, but is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks Near VG. The page fore-edges are uniformly tanned, and the blank third page has a gift note addressed to the former owner and which is written in green pen. Otherwise No other Inscriptions or other Marks, the book is crisp clean and tight. 320 pp. Illustrated in b/w with photos and some line drawings/decorations in the text, and with green & brown coloured map endpapers. Overall, apart from the minor 'faults', as detailed above, this is a Very Clean, Tight and Secure, 'Very Good' copy. " The author, a war correspondent & author, tells of the first all-airborne invasion into the jungles of Burma during World War II. He recounts the war in Burma through the words and deeds of three famous men - Colonel Phil Cochran, a bold young fighter pilot, Colonel John Alison, one of the American Air Force’s most ablest men, and the legendary General Orde Wingate who improvised the brilliant tactics that opened the road back to Mandalay for the Allies. All the regiments and peoples involved are included - Wingate’s Chindits, the Scots of the Black Watch, the Gurkhas and West Africans, & of course - the Japanese......" ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
