The editor's introductory essay emphasizes the importance of studying the concept of lifestyle--and multiple lifestyles--in former Soviet-type regimes where homogenization of the population was the goal and individual autonomy was minimized. Allaste is a sociologist with research interests focusing on young people, subcultures, and new social movements; she's affiliated with Tallinn U., Estonia and has brought together work from her colleagues, primarily, with a few contributors affiliated elsewhere.
