About This Item
London: The Francis Bacon Society, 1949. Original issues. Very Good+. Baconiana, first published in 1886, is the literary journal of the Francis Bacon Society, which sustains and promotes the study and appreciation of the many works of Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), English philosopher and statesman, who served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England He led the advancement of both natural philosophy and the scientific method and his works remained influential even in the late stages of the Scientific Revolution He has been called the father of empiricism He argued for the possibility of scientific knowledge based only upon inductive reasoning and careful observation of events in nature He believed that science could be achieved by the use of a skeptical and methodical approach whereby scientists aim to avoid misleading themselves Although his most specific proposals about such a method, the Baconian method, did not have long-lasting influence, the general idea of the importance and possibility of a skeptical methodology makes Bacon one of the later founders of the scientific method His portion of the method based in skepticism was a new rhetorical and theoretical framework for science, whose practical details are still central to debates on science and methodology He is also famous for his role in the scientific revolution, begun during the Middle Ages, promoting scientific experimentation as a way of glorifying God and fulfilling scripture These volumes are ex-library and nicely professionally bound in orange cloth with gilt titles on spines All volumes are in excellent condition, with no visible damage at all All issues have been bound in their entirety, including wrappers Slight age toning of paper, but otherwise text is unmarked and undamaged, and show very little useNote: My policy of free shipping within the US applies, but any destination outside the US will involve significant shipping charges,, since the volumes are quite heavy (9+ lbs).
