About This Item

Paris, Aug. Blaizot, éditeur, et R. Kieffer, relieur d'art, 1910. Large 4to. (2 blank leaves). Frontispiece. 2 leaves. 109 pages. 1 leaf. + 104 leaves. + 66 leaves. + 13 leaves. + 10 leaves. + 3 manuscript leaves and 1 leaf. Full green morocco richly decorated on the back and on the boards (Kieffer). This work is the first book illustrated by Georges Bruyer (1883-1962), a Parisian painter-engraver who was noticed by the bookbinder, publisher and bookseller René Kieffer (1876-1963) and who subsequently became one of the most renowned artists of his time, notably for his engravings of the Great War or of small Parisian trades. Magnificent copy, one of twenty leading copies on vellum paper (out of a total print run of two hundred and fifty), containing three states of etchings including pure etching, a separate print of woodblocks on Japan peel and a watercolor unpublished full page. It is covered in a sumptuous art-deco binding executed by Kieffer who inscribed the following signed note on a flyleaf: "Cet exemplaire, relié en deux volumes, comprend: 1°. Despite these indications, the copy ultimately seems to have been bound in only one volume, without the color proofs. Magnificent copy.
