About This Item
New York: Boni and Liveright, 1926. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Good. First Edition. Yellow cloth spine with black lettering; sides are printed in yellow and black. Very slight wear to fore-corners. Previous owner's name and date (1926) on half-title page, else clean. Dust jacket shows edge chipping; tear along upper part of front spine edge; price clipped. DJ in archival sleeve. 313 pp. 8.25 x 5.75 inches. A vividly written, "somewhat" biographical story of a modern Japanese man. A culturally insightful account, with discussion contrasting Anglo and Japanese ethics and cultural norms, the story ranges from a mischievous boyhood, family and village life, through an education and time at Doshisha College and Waseda University, to his involvement in the Tokyo street car riots, and the great earthquake of 1923. John Paris was the pseudonym of Frank Ashton-Gwatkin (1889-1976), a British novelist and diplomat. Prior to 1929 he was stationed in the Far East, and served in the Consular Service, the Foreign Office, and the Diplomatic Service.
