Madox pioneered the accurate diplomatic editing of medieval sources. For recognition of his scholarship, he was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1708. Later appointed historiographer royal in 1714. This was an important appointment for him. His work remains important for the serious medieval scholar and particuarly in establishing the primary of original government records which he has produced with painstaking accuracy. His work was basic to Maitland, Tout and Poole in the 20th century. Madox died January of 1727 before he had completeted his revisions to the Baronia. It was then published pothumusly in 1736 as a rememberance of his significant works with an engraving on the title page showing the four books he had written. A very handsome copy bound in contemporary calf double ruled in gilt, raised bands ruled in gilt, lettering gilt, lower corners bumped, binding rubbed, From the early library of James Frampton with his bookplate.
