London : James Blackwood , 1856 . Leather. Very Good. 6.5" by 4" . none . A scarce very early edition of William Wilkie Collins's second novel Basil. Rare to see in a single volume this edition published four years after the first of 1852.The novel follows Basil who falls in love with a woman below his station and wishes to marry her in secret and the events that unfold lead to violence and revenge. William Wilkie Collins was an English novelist and playwright and is said to have written the first modern English detective novel. Half calf binding. With marbled paper covered boards. Externally, smart. The extremities are slightly bumped, as is the head and tale of the spine which is also slightly faded. The front board has some marks. previous owners sticker to the front pastedown. Binder's stamp to verso of rear free endpaper. Front hinge is starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot. Very Good
