First novel by this Brazilian artist and poet, a story of 'murder, rebellion and revenge' set in Bahia, the capital of 17th century colonial Brazil. Translated from the Portuguese by Giovanni Pontierro. The translator's note quotes a contemporary history as saying that Bahia was 'a hell for blacks, a purgatory for whites and a paradise for mulattos.'
