About This Item

London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1972. Very good plus in very good plus dust jacket.. First printing of this rather haunting tale of a young boy's very unusual holiday on the coast, as he learns the difference between cruel scavengers and the ethereal BEACHCOMBERS - with atmospheric illustrations by Errol Le Cain. British illustrator and animator Errol Le Cain imbued his art with whimsy, style, and "a certain strangeness" that gives it a unique atmosphere (Hunt). He incorporated various aesthetics into his work depending on the subject of the book he was illustrating, and was particularly well-known for his illuminated manuscript-like compositions. Le Cain earned awards in both the fields of animation and illustration, including a Kate Greenaway medal and four Kate Greenaway commendations. 7.75'' x 5''. Original orange cloth binding. Original unclipped (£1.30) color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in black and white. 126 pages. Jacket with light edgewear and a sliver of sunning; a bit of scuffing to rear. Binding spine ends a touch bumped; front board slightly warped. Leaves with occasional tiny spots of soil to margins. Solid.
