Twenty seven plates after photographs and sketches. 8vo original gold stamped decorated cloth (s mall paper label on spine, library stamps) The author was a prosperous beaver trapper for many years, until his fondness for and curiosity about the animals caused him to renounce his trade and become active in protecting the beavers. The first half of this book is a detailed description of the beaver and of beaver-trapping; and the second half entitled " Other Sketches" includes memoirs of trapping various species in Iowa, Nebraska, and North Dakota in the 1860's and 1870's, along with other pieces on local natural history and the game laws.
