Quarto size, 111 pp. A stopping point on the way to the gold fields during the early days of the California Gold Rush, Marysville was originally named "Jubaville", which was then called "Yubaville". This volume, one of a series by the California Historical Society, explores the colourful history of the town dating from its first European-American visitor, Jedediah Strong Smith, whose entries in his diary relating to the area date from March 16, 1828. Relatively scarce in the marketplace.

___DESCRIPTION: Tan paper boards with a rust cloth spine, paper labels on both front and spine, plain endpapers, frontispiece a reproduction from oil of Mary Murphy Covillaud, for whom Marysville is named, title page in red and black with a four-colour map showing Marysville at the junction of the Yuba and Feather Rivers inset, sectional headings in red, illustrated with vintage photographs and facsimiles of newspaper pages, with one folding map; small quarto size (just under 10.25" tall), pagination: (i-vi), 1-105.

___CONDITION: Near fine overall, with a strong, square text block with many signatures uncut, solid hinges, corners very gently bumped but with no rubbing, the interior is fine, the pages are clean and bright, the volume is entirely free of prior owner markings, the folding map is in fine condition and appears never to have been opened; some light soiling to the cloth spine, a stray light soil mark or two on the paper boards, and a very small old dampstain on the top front corner, else fine.
