About This Item
The Bellows Canal was one of the oldest canals built in the United States, in order to allow boat traffic to bypass Great Falls, and render the Connecticut River navigable; started in 1791, it took ten years to complete its nine locks and 52 ft. high dam, by which time it was already being used to power a mill. The cost to the investors was $105,338.13. By the time the railroad came in 1849, river traffic declined and the canal was used for power only.
Alexander Fleming (1790-1867) who signed for the company, was the husband of the founding partner of the Canal Company, John Atkinson.
With the seal of the Bellows Falls Canal Company, and signed by Justice of Peace, Alexander Campbell. Registered in Town Clerk's office February 25th, 1834.
