About This Item

Cleveland: The World Publishing Company. Good+. 1948. Hardcover. A reprint edition of Carl Van Doren's rather lengthy biography of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). The author, in his preface, says: "This is a long book. It could twice as easily have been three times as long." Franklin, described as a polymath (Wikipedia), was a publisher, American founding father, postmaster, politician, diplomat and inventor. Born in Boston, he made his way to Philadelphia where he found a home. --- In full rust cloth-covered boards with titling in gilt to cover and spine; red topstain. Volume has no dust jacket. --- A tightly-bound, sound copy but with a splotch of brown soiling to front free endpaper and wear to lower cover edges; cover and spine gilding has faded considerably.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xix, 845 pages .

Pulitzer Prize winner, considered to be one of the best biographies of Benjamin Franklin. The author's son became famous for his involvement in the TV quiz show scandals.
